Tangram Lesson

Dear Parents,

Today, we have embarked on a tangram lesson. This is in-relation to our unit on shapes.

Manipulation of tangram will help enhance your child's
1) spatial visualisation
2) perception of space
3) creativity

From research, it has been found that "Tangrams help students develop mathematical concepts of fractions, spatial awareness, geometry, area, and perimeter" (Rigdon, D., et al., 2000, p. 304.305). Because tangrams involve physical manipulatives as well as virtual manipulatives (online tangram activities), this caters to a variety of learning styles.

Here is a tangram template for you to help your child to create his/her own tangram! Tangrams are also available at all major bookstores.

You can also let your child play this virtual tangram game from this link.

Have a great bonding time!

Appeal for Post-It-Notes and Used Bookshelves

Dear Parents,

As part of my continued efforts to engage the class in more experiential learning, I will be using Post-It-Notes for pupils to express their thinking in words.

As I do not have enough, I am appealing to parents for contribution of Post-It-Notes. It can be those corporate Post-It-Notes that your company/office might have. Thank you very much for your contribution.

As our classroom has limited storage space, I am putting our pupils files in cardboxes. However, they give way quite often.
As such, if you have old bookshelves that you are looking to throw away, I appeal for you to contribute it to our class. We have Math manipulatives and a lot of files to store, namely:-
1) English file
2) Math file
3) Social Studies file
4) Portfolio file
5) Mother Tongue file

These are a total of about 145 files.....  Thus, if you have an old bookshelf that you would like to contribute to our class, please email me. Thanks!

International Friendship Day Celebration

Here are the photos taken during International Friendship Day. Thank you to parents who spent time to doll up and prepare their children for the event. Greatly appreciate it! Enjoy the photos!

International Friendship Day

Dear Parents,

We will be celebrating International Friendship Day tomorrow, 13 April 2012.

The pupils are encouraged to wear national costumes that represent other countries like China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, New Zealand, Scotland etc.

Do remember that pupils must wear their school shoes with their costumes. I would encourage the girls who are wearing cheongsams to wear tights under it as I noticed that the pupils' movements were very restricted when they were sitting on the floor during Chinese New Year Celebrations because of their tight cheongsams.

I hope that many of our pupils will be wearing their costumes so it will be a beautiful picture when I upload the photographs here. Stay Tuned!

Sandwich Making Experience

Dear Parents,

In line with our learning of the Big Book "The Hungry Giant", we had a sandwich making experience on Tuesday! The pupils put their independent skills to use. Most of them managed to follow the procedural text instructions well. Some of the pupils were really sweet too! They remembered to share their sandwich with their parents! You must be very touched!

But the fun and learning doesn't end there! We consolidate our experience into a Class Writing as seen in the last pic! Good Job for everyone! Enjoy the photographs, parents!
